There really are things to do in Topeka

Tonight, I went to see Vicki Lawrence at Topeka Performing Arts Center (TPAC) with my family. She was hilarious. I laughed for almost 1 1/2 hours straight. TPAC is such a beautiful theater in downtown Topeka. I remember doing at least 8 dance recitals for The Dance Factory in that theater. I have seen the Festival Singers in that theater. I don’t understand why more shows aren’t performed in that theater. I have heard people say that the reason it doesn’t do as well is because of its location at 8th and Quincy and parking. I felt 100% safe walking the block and a half to the parking spot that we had no trouble finding along Monroe, just south of 6th Street. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I agree that TPAC is a beautiful venue. I don’t find myself visiting TPAC very often because I am more of an outside person but I would like to find myself sitting there again soon. If I remember correctly, there was plenty of light outside the venue the last time I attended Jeff Foxworthy’s show at TPAC. I felt safe walking to my vehicle with no problems. However, we did have to dodge and ignore Phelps’ group on the way in the door. Apparently, no one is excluded from their campaign to tear people down. Way to hang in there Topeka! Keep ignoring them and maybe they will go somewhere else! Enjoy Topeka and what it has to offer!

Thanks Wendy for checking out the site. I forgot that Jeff Foxworthy appeared at TPAC. I bet that was a good show. We, also, had to dodge the Phelps’ clan, but most people ignored them. It is almost a given now that they will be at these events. Thanks again for checking out the site!

TPAC is a wonderful facility! They’ve actually had several great shows come through in the past few years - Cirque Dreams (like Cirque de Soleil), Ron White and Kansas, just to name a few.
I look forward to seeing this year’s line up. They’ve already announced The Last Comic Standing Tour in October … I know that I’ll be in the audience for that one!

I read about Jason Aldean (and Lady A) coming on CJOnline. I was not aware that Stomp and Hairspray were coming. I feel a girls night out coming up.

TPAC IS a wonderful facility. I think like most Kansas attractions, TPAC is lacking in funding. It takes money to bring big name performers to town. And once they get the performers here it takes people in the seats to make the event a success. But then again, I’m probably preaching to the choir because you all already have a vested interest in making Topeka a better place — and KUDOS to you for doing so!

I’m a little biased myself — I work at Visit Topeka Inc., the Topeka Convention & Visitors Bureau. While we normally focus out efforts on marketing Topeka to out-of-staters, we recognize the need to reach out to our local community too b/c we’ve found that some of our locals tell our visitors that “There is nothing to do in Topeka…go to Lawrence or Kansas City.” This is not an exaggeration, it really does happen, and probably even more than we realize.

And nothing could be farther than the truth! Topeka is home to 20 attractions, 16 art galleries, five performing arts venues, spectacular annual events, and much more.

Keep supporting Topeka attractions, events, shops, and restaurants and continue to spread the word. People don’t have to leave town to find what they need — it really is all right here. Check us out online at http://www.visitTopeka.travel

Melissa,
Thank you for taking the time to check us out. I find it sad that our residents encourage those visiting Topeka to go to Lawrence, Kansas City, or other places. While there are great attractions in those cities, there are great things to do right here at home. We have great golf courses, the Zoo, TPAC, Expocentre, museums, and many other great attractions. I really hope that this site can help others to find their excitement and pride for Topeka, as we have over these past few months. Thank you again for checking us out!

I truly believe that the people in Topeka like to struggle. I mean TPAC was having hard times and they are finally becoming a reputable venue again and the City steps in and pulls the rug out from under them. My city council person said QOUTE “Currently, the overwhelming majority of taxpayers I hear from are opposed to TPAC funding.” I was not invited to anything where I could voice my opinion so I have no clue how HE can make such statements. I also have no clue who he was talking to. I can not wait until April. PLEASE someone run. I would but then I would have to give up all the other stuff I do and for those of you who get my newsletters you know that I am already doing all I can to make Topeka the best City it can be. I don’t need a title to make a difference I just need heart and HELP!!!

Kim,
Thank you for taking the time to check us out and commenting on our post. While I think TPAC is great for Topeka, I am of the opinion that it shouldn’t be provided tax money, but should be self-sustaining. There is a venue in Salina similar to TPAC that is self-sustaining. I do feel that there are a lot of people who feel that their voices are not heard in the city. I hope that we are able to find fresh faces to run for all 9 seats in the next few years. It would be nice to see the City run a little differently, and I believe that there is enough of a voice now from the youth of this city to accomplish that. Please check back to this site often and let us know what you think. We all may not agree on every issue (as is the case with the TPAC funding), and I find that diversity of thought refreshing. I think we all agree that things in the city need to change, and I hope that enough of us will become more involved in the coming years to see that the changes happen.
