Heartland Visioning::Infrastructure

First, I’d like to apologize for being remiss about getting this up sooner.  Now, for the review:

The vision listed under infrastructure is as follows:  Shawnee County will build a community that promotes learning, health, safety and growth for all residents through long-term planning and best practices. I think this is probably a pretty fair assessment of just about all people everywhere :)  Who doesn’t want this?  But it is among the top 10 issues that were deemed the most important in our county.  In fact, this section addresses 3 of the top ten issues.  Here’s a copy of it so you to follow along.

The strategies are broken into 10 areas of infrastructure… almost like a wish list.   We’ve all mentioned this before, but this is an ala carte type of thing.

Transform Topeka Community Forum

We are working on a Transform Topeka Forum to allow futher discussions that we just don’t have time to cover on the blog. We welcome everyone’s opinions on the forum, but we will not allow flaming or trolling. We are a friendly bunch and want to extend that to the forum.

We are working on a button to put with our Linkden and Facebook bannere as well as a few “Link to us” buttons if you want to share our resources with your friends and family.

We encourage your participation in the forums, and we’ll hopefully meet up with a few of you next month at Gage Park.

Grand Re-Opening

The Topeka Blvd bridge construction is complete! From afar, the bridge has beautiful touches. The area at SW 1st & Topeka (”my side” of the bridge) looks completely new. There are celebration plans for tomorrow afternoon and will officially open on Monday. I know the businesses that have been affected by the construction will surely be celebrating themselves.

The construction was a ‘have-to’ project because it was literally starting to fall down. My hope is that the renovation of this area grows throughout the rest of the city… before they become ‘have-to’ projects.   Just like when you finish one project in your house, you can see all of the other areas that need fixing.  And just in this way, we’ll have to take a look at the most-needed areas and the ones that we can afford :) to take of next.

website updates

Hello everyone,

We have a new look for the blog, we had a logo made and I had this style setup with the logo today.

I may be adding a few more things to help with the viral attention, but for the most part, what you see is how it’ll look for some time to come.

Former Air Force base brings tenants to industrial park

By Michael Hooper

The Capital-Journal
Published Monday, June 16, 2008

Forbes Field, a virtual ghost town after the U.S. Air Force left in the 1970s, has evolved into a growing community of hundreds of people working in numerous other enterprises.

About 200 employees of Electronic Data Systems Corp. will move from White Lakes Center to a building owned by Chuck Lucius at Forbes Field in late summer. Lucius’ 25-employee company, Independent Brokerage, is moving this summer to 3740 S.W. Burlingame Road.

City of Topeka Neighborhood Health 2007

I found the map below quite interesting. I did not know the City even had something like this. I found out from a news story on KTKA about the Elmhurst neighborhood going from "At Risk" to "Healthy".

Topeka: Good and Bad

I recently moved back to Topeka from the Kansas City area. I have not lived in Topeka for about 8 years. One of the main reasons we moved back to Topeka was to be closer to our families. This, I believe, is a major reason most people decide to stay in Topeka. I’m going to give my opinion on two things that I believe is a good thing and bad thing about Topeka.

The first thing that I notice is good about Topeka is the majority of the neighborhoods in the city are nice and tranquil. A strong community feeling inside each individual neighborhood is a strength that we need to keep moving forward with as Topeka continues to grow. Strong community roots will enable the neighborhoods to stay nice and keep people accountable for their actions.
