Topeka.org: Burning Season to Begin

The Topeka Fire Department will begin taking burn permit applications on Thursday, October 1, for the upcoming fall burning season, which is scheduled from October 15 through November 30.

 Applications can be made through November 25 by accessing the City’s Web site at www.topeka.org, click on “City Services A to Z Directory,” then “Burning Permits.” Applications can also be made by calling the Topeka Fire Department at 368-4000 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend Spotlight: Cider Days

As a kid, I remember visiting Cider Days every year and taking in the crafts and of course the apple cider.  It used to be outdoors and was an annual event that our family did not miss.

This weekend it is back.  The annual festival is inside Landon Arena at the Kansas Expocentre.  The schedule is Saturday September 26th 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday September 27th 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Advance purchase tickets are $6, or pay at the gate for $7.  Children under 10 are free.  Advance tickets available at all Topeka-area Walgreens and Hy-Vee locations.  Read the rest of this entry »

Topeka.org: Fire Department Seeks Relatives

The Topeka Fire Department is looking for surviving relatives of Silas Brown, a Topeka firefighter who died in the line of duty in 1926. 

Brown’s name will be added to the Kansas State Fallen Firefighters Memorial on October 11 in Wichita. The Topeka Fire Department Local 83 Color Guard will be on hand for the honor.  Surviving relatives will be encouraged to attend.  Read the rest of this entry »

Topeka.org: Council to Hear Smoking Ban Testimony

The second of two public hearings regarding a proposed smoking ban ordinance will be at the same location as the first.

The Topeka City Council will again hear public opinion about the proposed Clean Indoor Air in Public Places and Places of Employment Ordinance beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday, September 28, at the City’s Holliday Building, 620 SE Madison. The first public hearing was Monday, September 21, where 29 speakers addressed the Council.

Each speaker will be given up to 4 minutes to talk unless a majority of the Council – five council members – grants an extension. Those wishing to speak can sign up in advance by calling the City Clerk at 368-3940, stopping by the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 215 SE 7th, or by calling the City Council office at 368-3710. Those wanting to speak can also sign up at the door the night of the meeting.

Topeka.org: City Seeks to Purchase Dilapidated Vacant Houses, Vacant Lots for Redevelopment

Wanted: Dilapidated vacant houses and vacant lots with back taxes due and owing, preferably with 50 foot or larger frontages. Properties located in the following zip codes will be given top priority: 66604, 66605, 66606, 66607, 66608, 66609, 66611, 66614, 66616 and 66617

The City of Topeka’s Housing and Neighborhood Development Department has received $1.6 million in federal funding to assist in the mitigation of abandoned, blighted and vacant properties. This includes vacant houses in need of demolition and vacant lots in which the owner is interested in getting out from under the cost of maintenance, repairs, demolition, insurance, mowing and future taxes.
