One of my fellow Leadership Topeka groups has put together put together the following that I wanted to share with everyone. Just another reason to get out to First Friday Artwalk next week!
In a coordinated effort with Leadership Greater Topeka, Arts Connect, various high school Art Departments and our local businesses that support and participate to promote the accomplished artists of Shawnee County, we have a very special First Friday Art Walk planned for our community. April 3rd, High School artists will have the opportunity to have their work showcased for all of the community to enjoy in featured galleries and businesses. We feel that this is a winning combination in that our talented students can enjoy the experience of being featured in a community wide event, this also serves to promote our local businesses and for our citizens who might not be connected with a school the project serves to increase awareness of what a gifted group of kids we are lucky to have in our community. Please see the attached First Friday Artwalk flier or www.artsconnecttopeka.org for more information, including the participating galleries.
I have not been very diligent in blogging after each session, but I did want to share a couple of highlights from the last 3 sessions we have had.
I very much enjoyed the third session we had. That afternoon, we spent some time at the Capper Foundation (www.capper.easterseals.com). The Capper Foundation is a wonderful organization that helps children with disabilities. They were wonderful hosts. We did a disability awareness workshop, where we were able to somewhat experience what it is like to have a sight impairment, learning disability, or be in a wheelchair. Read the rest of this entry »

The proposed sales tax increase in Topeka of one half of a percent that will be on the April 7th ballot has raised many concerns from hard-working Topekans who don’t feel that this is a good time to ask them to spend more money than they are already spending (as if a good time to ask for more money existed.)
We are living in a recession. Every penny counts. Even every half penny counts. If this sales tax increase was not designed to increase outside business interest in the Topeka area, to create new jobs, a new quality of life and an overall upgrade to our fair city’s image, then I’d be arguing against it myself. But the simple fact remains that there are many arguments for and against, but at the end of that difficult road remains a choice. Read the rest of this entry »
The issue on the ballot next month isn’t a question of whether we should have better streets — who doesn’t want better streets? Certainly the business community would be among the first to say that properly maintained streets are essential to their businesses and to attracting new ones.
The issue is whether or not a special sales tax should be levied on everyone to pay for a basic and essential service of city government.
The members of the Topeka Independent Business Association (TIBA), mostly small business owners from every kind of industry imaginable, were surveyed and overwhelming said NO to a sales tax. Are they saying they don’t want better roads? No. Are they saying they don’t support Heartland Visioning? No. They’re just saying that a sales tax is the Wrong Road to fixing our streets.
