Our next gathering

We had a wonderful time in October for our meet-n-greet…. gosh! it’s hard to believe it’s already been 2 months!

We invite you to join us on Sunday, January 11 from 6:30-8 PM at The Break Room! Kim Schultz has graciously offered, and we have humbly accepted, to have the gathering at her downtown restaurant located at 911 S Kansas. This will again be a potluck with drinks provided.

And the winner is…

On behalf of TransformTopeka, thank you for all of the entries in our contest.  It was so wonderful to see what everyone loves about Topeka.  As promised (sorry for not getting this posted sooner) we have 3 winners of Chamber gift certificates.  The winners are Wendy Madere, Bob Hiller, and Lyn Weichert.  Congratulations to our winners and please check back in the future for more fun events to participate in.

Greetings from Transform Topeka

First, we wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays. During this time, when this is work, shopping, and parties, and so much to do, let’s all try to make sure we take time to enjoy our family and friends.

Second, there is a lot of work that lies ahead of us as a community. In order to accomplish the goals, we need to realize that we all need one another; we are all on the same team. Each person in this community has something to offer to help make a difference. We, as members of this community, have an obligation to inspire one another to get involved and make not only our community better, but our own lives as well.

Finally, Transform Topeka would like to thank everyone who has chosen to support our efforts and to those who have supported Topeka in their own special way.

It is our hope that the best is yet to come.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

- Margaret Mead

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Economy, Jobs, and Taxes …from the East

During the summer, the members of the Heartland Visioning task force, determined that one of the problems facing Topeka was facing specifically had to do with creating a more business friendly enviroment. Frankly, the state of Kansas as well.

Many will ask how?

Upon further examination, one of the catergories regarding the types of jobs Topeka faired well in was the Financial/Insurance/Securities.

Considering we have corporations here such as AVIA and Security Benefit, it would seem to make sense.

Where are the areas of the country with an even worse economic climate that could allow the City of Topeka, Shawnee County, and the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce to capitalize on?

Why not New York? The following story, I think would further support the argument

There would be some logistical issues, like actually having responsible government spending. Oh, and we would actually have to have a more business friendly enviroment. Aside from that, what would prevent Topeka/Shawnee County from accomplishing this?

Topeka is heading in the “Green” direction

CJOnline reported today about the newly established “sustainability advisory board”.  This board was established by the Topeka City Council in September to advise the Council on environmental issues.  Serving on this board is voluntary.  Currently 6 of the 9 members have been appointed by the mayor and approved by the City Council.  The other 3 appointments will be reviewed at this Tuesday’s (Dec 16) Council meeting.
